Victoria East and Victoria West open their doors and will square off in the final week of the regular season. The game will be the first between two Victoria high schools since Stroman and Victoria High played in the fifth week of the 1999 season. The East-West game is scheduled for Nov. 5 at Memorial Stadium and will be the DQ Big Game of the Week. The teams will be featured on FOX Sports Southwest.
Class 2A and 1A have been divided into 16 Division I districts and 16 Division II districts based on enrollment. The larger schools will compete in Division I and the smaller schools in Division II. The plan was originally to take two teams from each district into the playoffs. But the Class 1A and 2A superintendents voted to have three teams advance to postseason play, with the district winner receiving a first-round bye.
Victoria West's Leonard McAngus, St. Joseph's Donnie Slatter, right, and Bloomington's Randy Perez are among the 10 new head coaches in the Advocate-area. McAngus, center, is a former Victoria High assistant and Perez is the son of former Victoria school district athletic director Ines Perez. Cuero's Rick Owens, Hallettsville's Tommy Psencik, left, and Flatonia's Chris Freytag were assistant coaches at their current schools last season. Ricky Lock returned to Gonzales after a two-year absence. Goliad's Marc Cunningham, Van Vleck's Greg Bagby and Ganado's Jimmy Thompson are at new schools.
The sites for the state championship games in all classifications will be played at pre-determined locations for the first time. Class 5A, 4A and 3A teams will play their championship games at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, while Class 2A and 1A teams will play theirs at Vernon Newsom Stadium in Mansfield. The six-man championship games will be played at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.
The University Interscholastic League is looking at the possibility of adding a Class 6A for the 2012 season. Superintendents around the state will be surveyed on the issue in September and the results will be brought to the UIL's Legislative Council in October. Also under consideration is rewarding the district champion with the home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
Football teams around the Advocate-area will begin working out for the upcoming season on Monday.
The exceptions will be Victoria West, Calhoun and El Campo, who held spring drills and will start practicing on Monday, Aug. 9.
The season gets under way on Friday, Aug. 27.
