BLOOMINGTON - All Caly Perez had to do was look around to see how much had changed.

Perez, a senior, was one of 18 players participating in Bloomington's first practice on Monday afternoon.

The numbers were significantly higher last season when Perez played at Corpus Christi Ray.

"It's pretty fast paced up there, but it's still football," Perez said. "It's going to be crazy regardless."

Perez made the move to Bloomington after his father, Randy, resigned as the head coach at Ray to become the Bobcats' athletic director and head football coach in May.

Randy Perez wasn't quite sure what to expect for the start of two-a-day practices.

"The main thing is getting the kids comfortable with our coaching style and schemes," he said, "and what we're going to be running offensively and defensively."

Perez is Bloomington's seventh head coach in the last eight years.

The Bobcats haven't had a winning season since 1998 and haven't made the playoffs since 1999.

Bloomington will go into the season with a 37-game district losing streak.

"It's not going to be a quick fix and we're not going to do anything overnight," Perez said. "It's going to take a little time. The kids are going to have to buy into what you're doing and they're going to have to trust and get some consistency and I know that's been a problem here. That's what we're going to try and fix."

The seniors are playing for their fourth head coach and doing their best to adjust.

"We've got to learn different material every year. It's been pretty hard," said linebacker Eddie Sawal. "But coach Perez has got more experience, and he's good with the guys"

Perez will spend a majority of two-a-day practices installing his offense and defense.

"We're going to be teaching. That's the main thing," Perez said. "Mainly we're trying to teach these kids the scheme of things."

Perez expects more players to join the team this week and is doing his best to increase participation.

"I've seen a lot of people talk about how they want to win games this year, especially a district game," said senior wide receiver Richie Vela. "We have to make sure everybody passes and gets into condition."
