Victoria East may be a primarily running team, but it won't be one-dimensional.

Quarterbacks Ervin Yates and Nic Wallace showed the Titans will have a passing game in a scrimmage against Bay City on Friday evening at Memorial Stadium.

Yates and Wallace were both on target throwing the ball, as East outscored the Blackcats 4-1.

"I'm real pleased," said East coach Mickey Finley. "Our quarterbacks were throwing the ball real well. We've got good receivers and we need to throw the football and we will."

Each team had two 20-minute possessions and played under game conditions minus the kicking game.

Yates threw a touchdown pass to Josh McClure. East also scored on touchdown runs by Jonathan Garner and Roderick Warren.

"Our running backs are special," Finley said.

The Titans also scored a defensive touchdown on an interception return by Justin Kalinowski.

"I thought our defense was really good," Finley said. "They were quick, fast and impressive."

Bay City's lone score came on a touchdown run by Courtney Finney.

"They were ready to play and we weren't," said Bay City coach Robert Blackmon. "East is a new school and they're excited about playing. I have to give coach Finley credit because they played a good, physical scrimmage."

The Blackcats are running new offenses and defenses and Blackmon knows it will take some time to become more consistent.

"We didn't execute as well as I like," Blackmon said. "We have to go back and work on that."

The Titans seemed to wear down in their previous scrimmage against Rockport-Fulton, but had no such problem against Bay City.

"We played more kids," Finley said. "We did condition well and they kind of had a day off yesterday (Thursday) so they had their legs under them."
