Edna's options: win district or stay home

CommentEDNA - Edna won't play a football game next week.
But whether Edna is preparing to begin the football playoffs or starting the basketball season will be determined by the outcome of Friday night's District 14-2A, Division I game at Hempstead.
A win over Hempstead will give Edna a share of the district championship and a first-round bye as the top seed going into the playoffs.
Unless Industrial loses to Hallettsville, a loss to Hempstead will keep Edna out of postseason play.
"That's crazy to think we could be the best team in the district or the fourth-best team in the district," said senior Nick Morrow. "I don't understand it, but I know if we take care of business this Friday we'll prove that we're the best."
Edna coach Mike Pierce has explained the situation to his team and believes his players will be able to handle the situation.
"That's one of the benefits of having a senior, experienced team like we have," Pierce said. "They understand the ramifications of it and I feel like we'll go out and do what we need to do to win."
Edna, Rice Consolidated and Hempstead each have one district loss entering the final week of the regular season and Industrial has two.
Rice Consolidated, which lost to Edna last week, has an open date and has already clinched a playoff berth. Rice Consolidated would be the top seed if Edna loses and the second seed if Edna wins.
Hempstead clinched a playoff berth with its win over Industrial last week. Hempstead would be the second seed with a win over Edna, or the third seed with a loss to Edna.
Industrial's only hope of reaching the postseason is to beat Hallettsville and have Hempstead defeat Edna. The Cobras would be the third seed.
"Anytime in football you're going to your last game and you're playing for a district championship or playing for a playoff spot that's all you can ask of a football team," Pierce said. "We've just got to go out and play our best game that we're capable of playing this week."
Edna's lone district loss was a 17-14 setback against Industrial in two overtimes.
The Cowboys are well aware they have the chance to eliminate their Jackson County rival.
"That's the ironic thing," said senior Kam-Ray Runnels, "They beat us and the irony is going to be is if we win, they're not even going to go to the playoffs, they're going to sit at home."
Playoff scenarios
Following are the playoff scenarios for Advocate-area teams. The top seeds in Class 2A and 1A receive a first-round bye.
District 30-4A: Victoria East has clinched the top seed in Division I and Calhoun has clinched the top seed in Division II. Victoria West would clinch the second seed in Division I with a win over East or a Gregory-Portland win over Beeville. If East defeats West and Beeville beats Gregory-Portland, West would be eliminated.
District 23-4A: El Campo will be the top seed in the Division II playoffs.
District 28-3A: Cuero will be the top seed in the Division II playoffs. Gonzales' only chance to reach the postseason is to beat Cuero and have Pleasanton beat La Vernia.
District 14-2A, Division II: Karnes City will be the second seed with a win over Three Rivers on Friday in Three Rivers or the third seed with a loss to Three Rivers.
District 15-2A, Division II: Schulenburg and Boling play for the outright district championship Friday and the top seed in Boling. The loser will be the second seed. East Bernard will be the third seed.
District 16-2A, Division II: Refugio and Banquete play for the top seed in Banquete on Friday. Refugio would be the second seed with a loss. If Banquete loses to Refugio and Skidmore-Tynan beats Kingsville Academy, it will be the third seed and Skidmore-Tynan would be the second seed.
District 15-1A, Division I: Ganado has clinched the top seed and Yorktown has secured a playoff berth. If Shiner defeats Louise or loses by less than 10 points on Friday in Shiner, Shiner will be the second seed and Yorktown will be the third seed. If Louise beats Shiner by 10 points or more, Louise would be the third seed and Shiner would be eliminated.
District 16-1A, Division I: Kenedy and Ben Bolt will play Friday in Ben Bolt for the outright district championship and the top seed. The loser will be the second seed.
District 16-1A, Division II: Woodsboro would claim the third seed with a win over Bruni on Friday in Woodsboro. A loss would eliminate Woodsboro.
TAPPS Division I, District 2: St. Joseph is locked into the fifth seed.
TAPPS Division IV, District 3: Shiner St. Paul has clinched the top seed. Hallettsville Sacred Heart and Bryan Brazos Christian will play Saturday in Hallettsville for the second seed. The loser will be the third seed.

I may be wrong about this, but if margin of victory is normally used to determine a 3 way tie, if Beeville beats Gregory Portland, then Victoria West, Beeville, and GP would each have 2 wins in district. Then margin of victory comes into play with the 2 teams who won by the most points advances. Since West beat Beeville 35-34 and West lost to Gregory Portland 39-14, the only way for West to advance is for Gregory Portland to beat Beeville or have Beeville beat Gregory Portland by 1 point. This would be the same margin of victory West had over Beeville. Then I believe either a coin is flipped or the head to head match between Beeville and West would take effect and thus West would advance since it won head to head. I may be wrong about this and tiebreaker scenarios do vary by district, but it seems the most logical way to me.

Please remember the above comment makes the assumption that West loses to East on Friday night. If West does beat East, then West will guarantee themselves a playoff spot.

Under the positive-negative points formula, Gregory-Portland has plus 18, which is the maximum it can get, for its win over Victoria West. Beeville has a minus one for its loss to West. West has a plus one for its win over Beeville and a minus 18 for its loss to Gregory-Portland, leaving it with a minus 17. If Beeville beats Gregory-Portland by any margin, Beeville and Gregory-Portland would have a better plus-minus ratio than West.
If the district simply used positive points, which very few districts do, Beeville would have to win by two points or more.
Of course, if West beats East, this is all moot and West goes to the playoffs.
Thankfully, this is all speculation and what matters is what happens Friday night on the field.
