Lady Flyers beat Holy Cross 3-1

St. Joseph overcomes slow start to pick up first district win

The St. Joseph Lady Flyers volleyball team got TAPPS district 2-5A play started with a 3-1 home win over San Antonio Holy Cross on Wednesday.

Although the Lady Flyers got sucked into playing at the tempo of Holy Cross, senior Amanda Kurtz got things going for St. Joseph much of the night with six aces, nine blocks and eight kills that included some spikes that gave her teammates a little extra pep.

"Amanda's a powerful player. When she's on, she's on. And when we get that kind of kill it definitely gives our team momentum," said St. Joseph volleyball coach Allyson Griffin.

Added Kurtz: "It's so amazing, it feels so good to just pound the ball."

Although Griffin said she was happy with starting district play off with a win, she admitted that the Lady Flyers still have some work to do this season.

"It wasn't our best game. I think we started off a little slow," Griffin said.

Holy Cross tried to slow the tempo of the game down and it worked most of the night. Although the Lady Flyers won in four games, they were never able to fully distance themselves from their opponent and Holy Cross scored at least 17 points in every game.

"We were not terminating each ball and that was tiring us out," Griffin said.

Although the Lady Flyers dug themselves a hole in the first game trailing 6-2, they climbed back to take the set 25-20.

In the second game it was the other way around as St. Joseph took an early four-point lead and withstood a Holy Cross comeback that tied the game at 13. They took the second set 25-18.

After dropping the third game, Griffin and co-volleyball coach Alvin Mumphord encouraged their team to shake off the loss and finish the match strong.

"We just kept telling the kids that they needed to play their game and play their speed and not let another team dictate what happened on our side of the court," Griffin said.

The Lady Flyers played the fourth game at their speed, taking the game 25-17, and the match 3-1, to win their first district game.

Kate Tucker and Alli Bales had strong games for St. Joseph. Tucker chipped in 10 service points, two aces, 15 assists and 12 digs while Bales had two aces, 10 service points and 15 digs in the win.

Kurtz said St. Joseph has a the potential to be very good if they play their game.

"We shouldn't play the tempo of the other team because then it slows us down and if we just play with our speed we should dominate," Kurtz said.

St. Joseph will look to go 2-0 in district play Saturday when they hit the road against San Antonio Providence.
