THE EAST GIRLS JUGGERNAUT
Coach Mike Smith said in previous interviews that the Titans are not overlooking the district tournament, but have their sites set on the regional tournament. Sophomore Ali Cowan has consistently been in the top five at every tournament the Titans have been at, and she has been helped by juniors Briana Reyes and Jackie Gonzales, who have also shot well for much of the season.
Showing steady improvement
The East boys started out with one goal in mind, their coach Troy McIntosh said, and that was to improve. Their scores have steadily improved throughout the last two months, particularly the play of Sammy Ray Hysquierdo and Weston Hall, who could other teams at the district tournament. East has the potential to compete if everything comes together.
WHICH TEAM WILL SHOW UP?
The Victoria West boys have been up and down all season long. Junior Trevor Vega has consistently shot in the mid-70s and low-80s, but the rest of the team has had wildly inconsistent rounds of golf throughout the season. The Warriors will need consistent rounds on their home course from Shannon Hawes, Klayton Koch and Trent Lee to have a shot. Gregory-Portland and Victoria West matchup well talent-wise (at the West Spring Classic in late January, G-P shot a 671, West shot a 673.) The Warriors have seen the potential benchmarks for the district in their tournaments this spring, and know where they need to be to make regionals.
NEEDING STRONG ROUNDS
Ashley Weaver has put up strong rounds this fall, finishing well in her last few tournaments. But Warriors will need her and fellow senior Meagan Neuman to go out and put up strong rounds to give the Warriors a shot in the tournament. Last year, at the District 27-5A tournament, Neuman and Weaver put up course bests at Victoria Country Club on the first day before sliding back the second day. Monday and Tuesday will be all about finding a medium, and not letting teams catch up to them.
Golfers from the six schools in District 30-4A will meet starting Monday at Victoria Country Club for the district tournament.
The top two teams, plus the top two individual finishers not on those teams, advance to the regional tournament, which will be at Pecan Valley Golf Course in San Antonio. The girls would play April 18 and 19; the boys, April 20 and 21.
Here are news and notes about the East and West girls and boys teams heading into the tournament:
