Victoria West's Sevanah Campos-Reyes loses the ball after attempting to tag out Calhoun's Rilea Whitaker at second base.

Calhoun had struggled to two losses in the last week, to Gregory-Portland and to Victoria East.

They ceded the District 30-4A lead, and Daniel Castillo knew he had to do something.

"We've started working out on Saturday's again," said the Sandies coach. "I had been giving them a break of late, but it's time to wake up again."

That wasn't the only change Castillo made.

"I rearranged the whole lineup, and I guess it took them a little bit," he said. "We went back to the way it was."

For four innings, it looked like it was going to be another lackluster night at the plate for the Sandies. But they erupted for three runs in the fifth and another two to wrap up the game in the seventh to beat the Warriors, 6-3, on Tuesday night.

The goal of the changes? To turn the lineup card over faster, and to make sure the bat stayed in the hands of the Sandies more powerful hitters.

"We just needed a couple of girls to get a couple of hits in a row," Castillo said. "We've been in a little bit of a slump of late, but a few people have been coming around of late."

It worked to a certain degree on Tuesday night against West. The first four hitters in Calhoun's lineup - Rilea Whitaker, Tiffany Castillo, Brittany Dworacyzk and Marissa Snyder - reached base 11 times in 16 plate appearances against the Warriors' Karly Rae Hoerig.

The rest of the lineup reached base a combined three times in 18 plate appearances.

West tried to make a comeback, first by matching Calhoun's three runs in the bottom of the fifth after a sequence of errors by Calhoun. They also threatened in the bottom of the seventh.

The goal, with a playoff spot clinched and two games left, is to get everyone back to their pre-district form at the plate.

"It's good to mellow out and still make the playoffs," Castillo said. "West played us once when we had everyone hitting, but no one else has played us with everyone hitting."

WOW Really!! For those of you that went to this game, please back me in saying West had this win in the bag hands down!! BUT, due to horrible calls made by the umpires in the first 3 innings (outside pitches that we're literally on the outside of the opposite batters box we're being called strikes & a few field calls) & not to mention their coaching staff that initially lost this game for the Warriors! Carly pitched a great game, Calhoun COULDN'T touch her the first few innings, big difference from blasting West's other pitcher in their previous match up. West was all hitting great, yet again due to RIDICULOUS errors on West's coaching staff they let the win slip away (Runner's not being moved on the bases as they should be, calling bad pitches to the pitcher)! The game should have ended with a win for WEST, & the Sandies know this, West got out coached, NOT outplayed!

Well I don't know about the West or East games last night except what I heard on the news, they both suffered a loss but I do know it isn't over until its over. Didn't West almost beat GP last time they played??? I heard the score was 2 to 1 and came down to the last inning. You never know, I think this one will go down to the wire.

If I have read right...
GP has 1 loss against East.
East has 2 losses - Calhoun and GP,
Calhoun has 3 losses - 2 GP and 1 East,
West has 4 losses.

So, again, if I have read right... at this point mexirican1423, right now there does not look to be a tie. There could be a lot of upsets, still to games to be played. Who knows... I guess we will know next Tuesday night around 9:00 p.m.

a few things can be said about east vs GP game. umpiring was terrible at this game. plus crowd was full of people with bad and vulgar language. also at one point two parents from GP came over from the baseball game just to heckle and cause problems. that place shows VERY poor sportsmanship. there were no officers at this game. thank god nothing happened, but it almost did. only one person can stir up a whole crowd then you put the players in danger. GP may have a decent team but their fan base needs some improvement. other than that decent game..

I agree with SBMOM, I think this is going to go down to the wire, I think things could get real good right about now. West is not to be counted out, only if their coach would get it together, they have some decent players, several who from what I hear have played together for along time & kow how to get the job done. Their starting pitcher Carly is decent, shortstop is fair, centerfield can cover the entire outfield & hit well. It will be very interesting these next few days!

GP has the trashiest fans in the Corpus area and that's saying something. Nothing but a bunch of low brow trash in that city.

The thing with GP fans is they talk so much trash like they have all these State titles or something. No one outside Region 4 has ever even heard of GP lol

I loved it during football season when Calhoun and Vic East shut them up!

Your right Ricky64... We do need to get along. We also need to teach the younger generations by being better examples.

I also agree about the power of the bats. However, any sports fan knows, that umps calls can and do... win and loose games with thier calls! I have no problem with East or West lossing. That is part of the game. Loosing is a part of what develops the heart of a TRUE Champion. I just say... let them loose fair and square.

ANY team should only have to play one game at a time... the game against their opponents. Not two... the opponents and the umps. Anyone who loves sports, knows exactly what I am talking about. The umpires need some more training and need to learn to be consistent. There are 2 umpires out there for a reason. That good ole' boy stuff that they you see where they can't make the right call on an appeal for the sake of hurting their partner is for the birds. Let each other do their job and call it the way it is seen. Again, thats why there are two. Looks like from my side of the fence that they do not want to offend the other person so they just go along with their partner's call. If that is not the case... then perhaps they need to pay closer attention.

This is what these kids train and sacrifice for. And though it is not the World Series... It does make a difference!!! Bad calls change the games momentum... Good luck tonight to ALL of the athletes tonight!!

Keep it classy...

I agree, the umps were horrible in that game. Both behind the plate and on the field. There isn't a lot a player can do when she is playing against the other team and the blues. Hopefully the game tonight will go a little better.
Coaching on West is horrible! I don't think there is a fan out there that would disagree. Pitching is average, shortstop is good at times, catcher is pretty good (heck, she should've had several throw outs but the blue wasnt on her side). Center field is quick. I know there have been some injuries but still a great athletic team! Coaching has been the issue all year.

Sounds to me like a bunch of whining. The West Coach bashers sound like they have a kid on the team that doesn't play. Sounds like all they care about is their kid. The game is about the kids and not about the parents. Thats what makes athletic competitions so bad now days, the fans. The games would be so much better for the kids if they could play with just the teams, umpires and the coaches out there. Parents should let the coaches and kids work together. From being at the game the other night sounds to me like too many parents try to coach from the stands and have never played a day of competitive softball. Try being quiet and letting the kids play instead of coaching them from the stands and teaching them the wrong way to play the game and teaching them the wrong way to hit, field and throw. That seems to be the problem. We have all of these select ball and little league coaches that coach so that their kid gets to play. Thats all a lot of parents are in it for. Their kids could be on a losing team and would be okay with that as long as their kid is playing. Come on people, no the game and pay attention. The game the other night was 0-0 for three innings, the umpire really had a lot to do with the game. The umpiring was so bad that the score was 0-0. HaHaHa. There was 1 stolen base attempt for both teams the whole game, catcher should have had a lot of throw outs. Come on really, LOL! The name of the game is adjust to the umpires strike zone. Seems to me both teams did that because there were runs put on the board late in the game. I have been to a lot of West games this year and the coaches don't seem to be the problem. It seems to me that the biggest problem is that you have people trying to tell the kids how to do things from the stands and it doesn't seem to be correcting the problem. The coaches seem to be working well with the players and the players seem to be working well with the coaches but some of the parents seem to be working against the coaching staff. Remember the old saying: "When you point the finger at someone there is always three fingers pointing back at you.

"West has great athletes, they are speedy, give 110% all the time and seem to be getting better down the home stretch. But when kids are being told two different things (one by the coaches and then something else by their parents) it confuses them. Be the parent and let the coaches do the coaching. I would bet that if their is a problem with the coaching the administrators in V.I.S. D. will make changes. Just watching the Coach from West the other night, seems he is always focused on the game. He treats the kids, umpires and the game with respect. Thats what it is about. The kids seem to respect him and enjoy his prescence. They seem to be enjoying the game and opportunities they have to play this great sport. If you don't enjoy what you are doing you are never going to be successful. The kids play the game the right way and I have never seen them disrespect an umpire, the coach or another player on any team. They play with passion and understand the game itself is to be respected. That doesn't sound like horrible coaching to me. Instead of coming up with these horrible things to say about the coach, think about what you really see out there. Great job West Softball in beating Gregory Portland tonight, your coaches must not have been there because you won the game. LOL.

Well put hillyhoohoo about the Coach bashing. Not much leading by example there.

I heard all sorts of things in the stands last night at both games. There were only a few at one game and the other game was loaded with complainers. Poor coaches, if their kids lose it’s their fault, if they are winning they made a bad choice and could have done something better, kids on the bench parents are complaining, one coach isn't aggressive enough, and one is too aggressive. Can anyone be happy? Your team won last night!

You are your daughters parents no one can take that from you but on the field, you should let the coaches do their jobs. You have to know that during the game, it is just that, THE COACHES JOB. Unless your kid is being put in harms way, you should let them do what they get paid to do. Wonder how many parents would enjoy the coach going to their job and telling them how or what to do?

I have said for years it’s so much easier from my side of the fence. We always see things that could be better and what we would do different. I feel so sorry for the coaches but even more sorry for the girls. Half of the time, an athlete has no idea what their parents do and the other half it only bothers the PARENTS. If the parents would spend as much effort in talking to their kids, keeping them off the streets, surrounding them with good influences, and nurturing them as they do complaining, they would probably find out that their kids are happy with their coach and there are many other legitimate things to worry about.

The more I thought about what I had witnessed, the more I wondered if the parents realized that these ladies ranging probably from 15 to 18 are gonna be on their own very soon. Are these same parents gonna go to their daughters jobs and do that? Or if they go to college are they going to sit in the stands and do the same thing at that level?

I can tell you this, unless things have changed, my kids college coach would have never put up with it. The college coaches researched my kids long and hard before they ever offered them a spot on their teams. Have you ever heard a college scouts questions to a coach? I have not heard them directly but if memory serves me right from my kids coach, some of the first questions asked was something like are they coachable? How do they interact with you as a coach and or with their teammates? What about their parents? YES, what about their parents? The truth is you never know who is sitting in the stands. Your daughter’s future college coach could be two seats away from you at these games. Remember, your actions will come back to haunt someone but you need to realize it could be your very own daughter.

Time to be supportive!!! If everyone tried as hard to perfect themselves as they do trying to perfect everyone else, this world would be one great place.

Enjoy the ride Athletes, hope both teams go very far in the playoffs!

SBMOM, Amen on everything you said. Best post yet. Keep them coming. Keep educating!! This is the work of a genius. Are you a philosopher? If not you should be. LOL.

April 17, 2011 at 1:19 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

SBMOM says...

Not a philosopher... just traveled a lot of softball miles with my own. My only goal is to inform. I am not a critic, maybe a little long winded to get my point across, but if one parent understands, then I have helped.

Truly, just beyond the Crossroads...there is a huge world out there; a world I traveled as a solo pilot and that I traveled as a passenger watching my own children. If softball is your daughter's passion, don't rob them... When you reach my age and you look back, things are so much clearer. Every parent must ask themselves, what kind of kids are my actions going to produce.

There were many young kids that my children graduated with, some of the most likely to succeed and the sad thing is some of them had parents who reminded me of those sitting in the stands the other night. The proud ones, the screamers, the cursers, and the complainers; I watched their parents bully their way though everything. Heck, their kids had no reason to not be successful and probably never even scratched the surface of their potential because everyone gave them everything they needed just to keep the parents quiet. But, when they went off to college, they were back to Victoria or out of college after only a very short time because they had no idea how to handle life, no one was there to fight their battles, dad wasn't there to make the football coach play them, and no one cared what their parents could do in Victoria, where is Victoria? The damage these parents can do locally because of their wrecking ball reputation or because of the family business means nothing about 30 mile away.

Again, I have traveled a lot of miles. Watch hundreds if not thousands of softball games, seen hundreds of athletes at every level, sat next to hundreds of different parents; and one thing remains... the kids that have parents who understand life, hard work, support their kids, allow them to fail, because they realize that they are still around to help them up, respect authority, spend their time aiming to be better parents, better examples, and talk more to their kids about their life instead of talking down about everyone elses... These parents produce exceptional kids, survivors, and future leaders...
