Victoria East had no idea what to expect from Corpus Christi Carroll, but it really didn't matter.
"I talked about our team being ready to play," said East coach Yulonda Wimbish-North. "I didn't know who they were going to start. I didn't know any of that. So I didn't have any matchups to begin the game.
"What I told my team is it's not about them, it's about us and what we do. We need to step up and be ready to play defensively and we did that. They were ready to play, had a lot of energy and caused a lot of turnovers and we were able to get a little run."
The Titans scored the game's first 19 points and went on to a 66-32 win on Tuesday night at the East gym.
East (18-1) converted six field goals, including a pair of 3-pointers by Adelaide Wenzel, and four free throws before the Lady Tigers (15-7) scored with 1:47 left in the first quarter.
"Our kids are really paying attention," Wimbish-North said. "I was very pleased with how they started the game, which is very important for us."
The Titans had a height advantage over Carroll and tried to work the ball inside to post Kenya Griffin.
"What impressed (me) was that Kenya at the beginning of the game she was moving and getting deflections and got a couple of steals," Wimbish-North said. "She was very active on defense and to me that was the most exciting thing."
Griffin had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks to go along with her two steals.
"They were trying to feed me in the beginning," Griffin said. "We worked on that in practice and I was trying to focus on trying to be more active in the post and not stand still."
Wenzel led the Titans with 18 points, Danielle Franklin had 12 points and five steals, and Breanna Williams added 11 points.
"We came out well prepared," Griffin said. "If we keep doing that, we should be able to start like we did."
