Flyers drop a pair of matches in tourney

On a chilly, windy day, the St. Joseph Flyers soccer team suffered a pair of losses at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The Flyers were playing for only the second time since the holiday break and their coach knows the pair of games will help his team out as they are looking for their first district win this season.

"Tournaments are very good for conditioning and will help us in the long run as far as district goes," said fourth-year soccer coach Omar Amaral.

Ernesto Perez' goal in the 74th minute gave the Warriors a 1-0 win over St. Joseph in the first game of day.

The Warriors controlled the tempo of the game offensively in the first half, outshooting the Flyers 5-0 in the first half and 6-2 for the match.

The Warriors managed only one second-half shot, but unfortunately for St. Joseph, that shot got past goalkeeper Clayton Mitte.

In the second game the Bay City Blackcats were the fresher team and it was immediately apparent.

Bay City scored three times in the first 18 minutes of the match as the Blackcats got by St. Joseph 4-0.

Gerardo Mendoza opened the scoring in the sixth minute and Ray Lopez' goals in the ninth, 18th and 68th gave him a hat trick.

The Flyers were outshot 18-2 in the match as Flyers leading scorer Daniel Stein went pointless for the first time since Dec. 4 against Laredo St. Augustine.

Although the UIL teams considered this a scrimmage, TAPPS rules required St. Joseph to count the games toward itsoverall record.

Defender Brad Woolson is confident the Flyers will turn things around going down the stretch of his senior season.

"We started strong and I think we have the potential to come out strong the last 10 games," Woolson said.

The Flyers are now 5-9 on the season and return to the pitch Saturday for a TAPPS Div. I, District 4 home match against Laredo St. Augustine.

What was the point of this article? To point out St Jo's losses or to give a cold shoulder to the teams that actually WON their games Saturday? Actual interesting facts about this tourney that apparently were not as interesting as St Jo losses:
The tourney was sponsored by East Titans Men's Soccer; soccer teams from all over the region participated; girls soccer teams were also playing that day; West Warrior Men's team with new coach Bill Tally actually WON both their games; need I go on?? The hundreds of kids involved in high school soccer have been training all fall and eagerly awaiting their chance to play. I know this was just a scrimage tourney and we appreciate the Advocate covering it at all but, honestly, why did you not actually cover the tourney instead of a bunch of nothing about one team that lost. And you are going to do another St Jo Soccer story on Monday?? Get real!

SimpleChoice< Alvarado is primarily the Private school person. Also when have you seen articles on scrimmages. Although West won both their games they are scrimmages meaning those losses or wins dont count towards their schedule. If you read the article it states just that. Sounds like your a west parent.
