Victoria East's Tyler Friedel attempts a shot against Victoria West defenders Clayton Cain and Rico Valle.

The Victoria West Warriors have been a second-half team over the past month and why would it be any different against their crosstown rival?

Drew Erskine scored 14 points and Jeremy Jimenez added eight of his own in the second half to lead Victoria West over Victoria East 43-41.

"This was a big win," Jimenez said.

The Warriors overcame a sluggish offensive start that saw them manage only seven first quarter points, but what was just as important were the defensive adjustments West coach Pat Erskine made.

The Warriors changed from a match-up zone to a man look after the first half and that helped slow the Titans.

"We played right into their hands, they wanted to slow the game up and control the tempo," said Victoria East coach John Grammer.

Fans were treated to an entertaining fourth quarter.

Although West came into the final frame with a six-point lead, they never relinquished it. Erskine hit two key free throws to give the Warriors a 42-38 lead with 28 seconds left.

Then everyone in the gym knew who the Titans were going to give the ball to.

"We knew Tyler (Friedel) was going to be the guy," Erskine said.

Added Jimenez: "We knew they were going to get it into Tyler's hands and he made a big shot at the end."

Friedel's second 3-pointer of the game cut the West lead to 42-41 with 13 seconds left.

After Jimenez hit one of two free throws, Dav'Vin Hill's last second jumper was off the mark and the Warriors escaped with the win.

Victoria East started the game with nine unanswered points in the first four minutes of the game.

Even though the Titans didn't let the hype of the first meeting with the Warriors effect them early, their coach saw a change in the team after the first half of the game.

"We just played tight," Grammer said. "It seems like we played not to lose instead of to win."

The Victoria West offense calmed down in the second quarter as they outscored East in the frame, but their inability to hit from the outside put them in a 23-19 hole at the break.

Even though the Warriors picked up a big win over a East, the biggest thing to come out of the game was a key win over a district opponent.

"It was big for us," Erskine said. "We realized if we went 1-2 we'd be coming out of a big hole."

The win propelled Victoria West to a 2-1 district mark and evens their overall record to 13-13.

The loss drops the Titans to 18-7 overall and 2-1 in district 30-4A.

This was my first time at a HS game this season. I am not impressed with the way the East Titans played. In the first half on the few occasions they worked the low post they were able to score. In the second half all they did was (in my eyes) showboat around (#3 and #24) especially. Coach Grammer you must not have taught your team to deal with a 2-3 zone. or you didn't put in players who were not ball hogs but wanted to win as a team. 250 laps for you and a day with a how to win at basketball dvd. You need to apologize to your team for this loss. You were at fault teaching them to play not to loose but oops if we do. BAD Coach.

south48 you must be out of your mind. I dont even live in Victoria but I do know that Coach Grammar is on of the best coaches in the state. Im sure Coach Grammar did everything he could to prepare his team as did Coach Erskine. Both of those men are great for the kids in VISD. It might come as a shock to you but even though a coach can tell a kid what to do and practice them to do it they still make mistakes and get confused. We are talking about 16-18 yr old boys. Teenage boys dont always make the best decisions. Give me a break south48. You owe yourself 500 laps and a day with a dvd on how to not be an idiot. You need to apologize to the readers of this newspaper for having made such a remark about a great educator, coach and community member of Victoria.

South48alex...................what game did you go to. I will admitt that the east team is not a strong team, they are good enough to win this dist. I want to say to #4 you are a great scorer, and a good player but to be the best on the court everynight you have to want it. This is why they didnt beat west nobody on that court can hold him but he seems to shy away when its time to step up. Him and The kid they call G can get it together this second half of dist. they will win the dist.

SouthAlex = Grade 1 Idiot. Probably couldn't coach his way out of a wet paper sack. If i'm not mistaken Coach Grammer has over 500 Victories coaching high school basketball in the state of Texas and over the past couple years has upset state ranked teams as recently as JUDSON at Judson last year while at Memorial. Do your research! Grammer has also taken a team to State in his career, alot of really good coaches don't even have that on their resume. Why don't you try and win 50 little dribbler games before you go bashing someone with 500 wins at the high school level.

south48alex--were you at the same game we were? Please give examples of any
"showboating" that you saw going on, especially with #3 and #24...please! Two good and confident ball players in my opinion. And I do believe Coach Grammer's record speaks for itself.
