Burris burns Generals late with bat, arm

Loss is Victoria's fourth straight; tied for last place in TCL

First, Josh Burris put the Acadiana Cane Cutters up by a run with his bat. Then, he shut the Generals down with his arm.

The pitcher and outfielder from Louisiana State-Eunice singled in Jordan Bourque in the top of the ninth off of Covey Morrow.

The hit gave the Cane Cutters a 9-8 win Wednesday after Victoria rallied from a deficit of as much as four earlier in the game.

Morrow picked up the loss; Louisana State product Chris Cotton picked up the win for Acadiana (6-5).

The loss was the Generals fourth straight, and sixth in their last seven games to drop to 5-8 on the season and tied for last place in the TCL with Brazos Valley.

Victoria played from behind the whole game. Acadiana jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on a second inning rally off of starter Tony Manville. The rally was keyed by a two-RBI single by Michael Barba.

The Generals battled back into the game, first with a three-run sixth that was led by Kevin Phillips two-RBI triple. He later scored on a Jake Runte single.

After Acadiana notched two more in the seventh off of Sam Hansen and Morrow, the Generals caught up again with two in the eighth to tie the game back up at eight, this time on a two-RBI single by Runte.

The Generals lead off hitter finished 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs, and was one of several players throughout the game who was hit by a pitch.

Tempers flared in the early in the sixth inning, as a succession of hit batters and retaliations throughout the game resulted in warnings to both benches after Manville threw a pitch that almost hit Acadiana first baseman Adam Seal.

After the warning, two pitches later, Manville hit Seal, his third hit batsman of the game and up to that point the fourth, and was ejected.

For the Generals, Phillips finished the game 2 for 4 with a triple, 2 RBIs and 2 runs. Both Kyle Arnsberg and Michael McGraw were 2 for 5.
