Calhoun's Brittany Dworaczyk, left, and Hillarie Hill shake hands with their opponent and coaches after the Sandies beat Corpus Christi John Paul II 16-2 in three innings during Tuesday evening's game at Port Lavaca.

PORT LAVACA - Tiffany Castillo ended the game for the Sandies with a fielder's choice.

But in a good way.

The junior catcher's ground ball to short, and the subsequent force out at second base was the first out of the inning, and enough to push across Calhoun's ninth run of an otherwise huge third inning.

Those runs put the Sandies (14-1-1) up by 15, invoking a mercy rule to beat Corpus Christi John Paul II in three innings on Tuesday night, 17-2.

Brittany Dworaczyk nailed her third home run of the season in the second inning, finishing the game 1-for-1 with four runs batted-in.

Junior pitcher Marissa Snyder had a strike out and held the Lady Centurions to just two hits and two unearned runs in her three innings of work.

"We've been hitting the ball well," said Sandies coach Daniel Castillo. "Sometimes we start a little slow, but this time we scored a lot of runs in the first, but this was the most we've scored in the first inning in a while.

"We've got a good hitting team, and we're going to score."

The offense came early and often for the Sandies, who have made a habit this season hitting the ball hard. After a leadoff out, the next five batters to open the game for Calhoun reached base and scored.

In the third, a blowout by Calhoun only got worse. Lady Centurions pitcher Celina Gonzalez, who had struggled to find the strike zone all game, became even more wild, walking the first seven batters of the third.

Surprisingly, that type of inning isn't uncommon, said Tiffany Castillo.

"We've had a couple of those," she said with a laugh.

Overall, all nine batters in the Sandies lineup reached base and scored in the inning, all before an out was recorded.

The Sandies are currently ranked fourth in Class 4A by the Texas Girls Coaches Association after reaching the regional quarterfinals at the end of last season.

Calhoun has its sights set on having a successful season, but the players know full well that they will face a lot of competition during district play.

But Tiffany Castillo said the team doesn't want to get ahead of itself by predicting how far they can go. But she's hopeful.

"I think we can go far, we have the heart for it," she said.
