Victoria East's Logan Curtis pitches to St. Joseph's Thomas Valenzuela in the fourth inning of their VISD tournament game on Saturday night.

Logan Curtis had struggled through his first inning of work. Two St. Joseph runs had crossed the plate

"I settled myself down, found where I was going and loosened up," said the senior pitcher. "I had fun with it, you know, just remembering that it's a game.

Finding a way to take the pressure off helped out.

"We've all been playing this game for most of our lives," he said. "Why not have fun with it?"

Curtis gave Victoria East six strong innings on the mound and also was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double to pick up an 8-3 win over the Flyers to close out the VISD baseball tournament on Saturday night.

Curtis' walk to Thomas Valenzuela and a single to Jerry Vasquez become runs on a Brad Matthiews double, but after that shut down the Flyers offense.

"I focused on my fastball and hitting my spots," he added. "Once I found my groove, things went well."

After the second inning, Curtis found the zone. He walked a few batters, allowing a total of five base runners. The Titans wouldn't allow a hit for four innings.

East coach Wes Kolle said the senior pitcher was pitching to his defense.

"He was letting his defense do the work," he said. "Early on, he was getting behind, but around the third inning he settled down and pitched to his defense, throwing to contact and letting them play behind him."

He finished the game with six innings pitched, allowing just the two runs and three hits. The Flyers had no hits off of Curtis after the second inning.

He also paced the offense, leading off the game with a walk and eventually scoring on a passed ball from Hayden Vesely to Matt Longoria.

"We like to jump on teams and get people on," Curtis said. "I was looking for my pitch and when I got it, knocked it around."

Vesely, St. Joseph's senior pitcher, struggled through his 4 2/3 innings of work, allowing a home run to lead off the second inning to Tanner Austin. But the Flyers undoing came in the fifth, when the Titans were able to post four runs and sent 10 batters to the plate.

The Flyers would get one more run off of Titans reliever Christian Herring on a Vesely triple, who made the final out of the game trying to stretch it to an inside-the-park home run.

WEST GETS TWO WINS

The Warriors followed up a shellacking of Fort Bend Bush with another strong hitting and pitching performance, getting several good innings out of Jordan Flores on the mound against Rockport-Fulton and torching the Pirates ace Clarence Marshall for six early runs to win 6-4.

Victoria West got four of its runs in the first two innings.

After jumping out to a 6-0 lead, the Warriors had to hold off Rockport-Fulton's comeback bid with two-run home runs from Brett Samora and Austin Gibson.

Colin Payne closed out the game, allowing two runs in 1 2/3 inning of work. Flores allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.

WEST ROUGHS UP FORT BEND BUSH

West hammered Fort Bend Bush 19-3.

West pitcher Jared Dolezal, did a solid job with plenty of help from the offense. He pitched just three innings, and held Bush to three runs on three hits.

The Warriors offense was strong in the first inning, scoring three runs, but it was only the beginning.

The Warriors scored five in the second, six in the third, and five in the fourth.

Robbie Trenck reached base all five times he came to the plate and scored three of those times.

Jordan Pacheco went 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIs.

Jeremy Jimenez also had four RBIs.
