Hallettsville holds on to beat Marion

FLORESVILLE - Hallettsville's defense has shut down Marion's power running game through two quarters, and made the most of a safety at the end of the first quarter to win 10-7 on Saturday night.

They will face San Diego in La Vernia on Friday at 7:30 p.m. next.

Braden Kahanek led the Brahmas passing game, going 14 for 25 passing for 214 yards. But it was with his legs that he got Hallettsville's only TD of the game, early in the second quarter following a sequence of events that gave the team the lead.

The Brahmas fumbled the ball late in the first quarter on Marion's 1 yard line. But on the following play, Hallettsville's Trevor McGee tackled Marion's Doug Giles with no time left in the first quarter for a safety.

The drive following the free kick was paced by quick strikes to Dalton Herrington for a24 yard catches and Anthony Vesely for a 23 yard catch.

Kahanek followed with a 1-yard TD run.

Marion dominated the second half, but struggled to get its running game going throughout. They had just 85 yards on 36 carries all game long. Their leading rusher, quarterback Doug Giles, was limited to 58 yards on 19 carries.

He had been averaging 156 yards per game entering Saturday's contest.

Also making a big impact for the Brahmas was Trevor McGee, who had six catches for 69 yards.

Hallettsville's defense also came up big in the fourth quarter, stopping Marion on their own 13 and 25 on two separate drives. Marion added a TD late.
