LA VERNIA - One point and from Edna's point of view one call separated the Cowboys from a possible Class 2A, Division I bi-district win.

The Cowboys had a touchdown erased by an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and the result was a 21-20 loss to Blanco on Saturday night at Bear Stadium.

The Panthers improved to 6-5 and advanced to the area round against Jourdanton. Edna ended the season at 7-4.

Edna thought it had taken the lead when Austin Kelley threw a flair pass to Darius Callies, who ran 60 yards for an apparent touchdown late in the third quarter.

But Callies raised his finger in the air and was flagged by the official, nullifying the score.

Two plays later, running back Devin Parks fumbled and Blanco recovered at the 20-yard line.

"He said he raised his arms up with 3 yards left to go," said Edna coach Mike Pierce. "They did the same thing down on this end. Nothing was called. It was not fair. That's the call the officials got to make and you've got to play with the referees and we've got to go on that."

The Cowboys still had chances to win, but Kyle Scott's 22-yard field goal came up short with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter.

Edna's final drive ended when Kelley was intercepted while trying to throw the ball away at the Blanco 34-yard line.

"We played pretty good we just made too many mistakes," Parks said. "You can't do that. We had too many mental mistakes that cost us."

Parks carried 30 times for 214 yards and three touchdowns. The senior, who has committed to the University of Houston, gained 170 yards in the first half and scored on runs of 67 and 9 yards. He added 15-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, but Scott's extra point was wide to the left.

"We overcame a lot of adversity this season," Pierce said. "I knew it was going to be a close game and it just didn't go our way."

Blanco also missed an extra point and a field goal, but took advantage of some mistakes in the Edna secondary and some costly penalties by the Cowboys.

"A lot of that is we're just so young on defense," Pierce said.

Blanco scored the winning touchdown on a 10-yard run by quarterback Tanner Rogers with 2:27 left in the third quarter.

The Panthers drove 70 yards in 10 plays and were helped by pass interference and personal foul penalties.

"I had a great senior year," Parks said. "It could have been better if it was at least one game longer."

Get in the end zone, hand the ball to the official and act like you have been there before. The great Earl Campbell never saw the need to celebrate.

For the record, when has Edna ever lost in football when the officials didn't have some part in it. That story has gotten real old by now!
