Refugio set a school scoring record, but coach Jason Herring wanted to talk about the defense.

The Bobcats put the clamps on Poth's power-rushing attack and ran off with a 41-7 Class 2A, Division II regional playoff win before a crowd of nearly 11,000 Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

Refugio improved to 12-0 and advanced to the quarterfinals. The Bobcats will play the winner of Saturday's East Bernard-Sonora game.

If East Bernard wins, the game will be at Memorial Stadium. If Sonora wins, the game will be played at San Antonio Heroes Stadium.

Refugio was torched for more than 300 yards in its bi-district win over Three Rivers. But the Bobcats limited the Pirates (11-1) to 212 total yards, including 128 rushing.

"Hats off to our defense," Herring said. "Everybody in town, everybody on the internet, even I didn't know. I knew they were going to try and line up and smash our mouth. Our defense came to play and they were the difference tonight."

The defense shut out Poth after its first offensive series and scored when defensive end Justin Padilla returned an interception 5 yards for a touchdown.

"After the first series, we just made one little adjustment," said linebacker Jake Heryford. "I feel like all night we were playing like we had something to prove, and I think we did that."

Refugio's offense was as productive as usual. The Bobcats rolled up 566 yards and brought its season point total to 751, breaking the record of 748 set in 1987.

"The sign of a good football team is one that can move it down the football field and stinking score," Herring said. "It ain't about big plays. That's a good football team, very well coached. You don't get to 11-0 for nothing."

Refugio quarterback Travis Quintanilla passed for 212 yards and two touchdowns. He completed passes to eight different receivers, including scoring passes of 3 yards to Jack Gumm and 5 yards to Shiloh Whetsel.

Lynx Hawthorne was Quintanilla's primary target, catching six passes for 141 yards.

The Bobcats also rushed for 354 yards. Draigon Silvas had 127 yards and scored on runs of 13 and 4 yards. Shiloh Whetsel had 114 yards and scored on a 13-yard run and added a two-point conversion run.

"We've been playing extremely well on offense and special teams," Herring said. "I didn't think we were playing bad (on defense), but we just didn't know we hadn't really been tested by anybody until Three Rivers and, honestly, we failed it miserably.

"I am just tickled pink. I'm telling you, I think this team has a chance to be very special when we do well in three phases. Once we get our defense rolling like we did tonight, the kicking game like we did tonight and offense, this team has a chance to be really special."

Lots of folks are sick and tired about reading stories about Refugio every week. There are a lot of other schools closer to Victoria who deserve some coverage.

Let the Corpus Christi Caller Times cover the Bobcats.

Refugio might win the the Region IV title, but they won't win state.

The Bobcats have lost my respect because of Coach Herring's antics of running up the score on teams.

Just check the Texas 2A board and you'll see how many folks who also don't care for Refugio.

How about you actually read the paper before you put your stupid comments up. There are articles on every area team in it. Calhoun, Ganado, and Hallettsville. Tomorrow there will probably be articles on Shiner, St. Paul, Sacred Heart, and East Bernard. You might also look at a map. Refugio is almost as close to Victoria as Port Lavaca. Think before you speak or don't speak at all. RHS Class of '93. Get that title Refugio. Good luck to all Crossroads teams that play today.

TejasMike, get over it! when you are #1 you do what you need to do, all the guys who play differ sports know how it goes. Its only the mamas that cry bout little Juan. Wait till this next week ONLY Refugio is still in from the crossroads. Or should VA cover LT, Cedar Park, Calallen, or Aledo. Alot of state agencies uses Victoria as it HQ and guess what? Refugio County usually falls under Victoria's umbrella.

I won't say that the Vicad is the greatest sports agency on the planet but their coverage of the local schools is pretty darn good. They appear to go the extra yard for East and leave West out. Overall, great job Vicad, Your video of the crab game is fantastic.

Refugio??? Who's whining about Refugio. They are doing what it takes to win. If you don't like it, don't follow them. Goooo Bobcats!!!!

Thanks Vicad!!!

I am suprised the Advocate did not have more coverage of the game last night at Memorial Stadium. It is not often that a # 1 team in the state is playing in Victoria. I witnessed the Bobcats for the first time this season last night. That is the fullest I've seen Memorial Stadium in a long time. Those young men on the Refugio team are the real deal!!!! I would not be suprised if they would have blown through District 30-4A!

Overall, I think the VicAD does an excellent job covering High School sports in the area, and I appreciate their efforts!

It's not difficult to understand why other schools are tired of hearing about Refugio. But some fans making comments seem to overlook the fact that the Bobcats suffer immensely from a lack of strong competition in the area. Usually, the consequences do not show up until the Bobcats get well into the playoffs, when, for the first time, they have to face a really good team. For a variety of reasons, no doubt, most area fb programs are a level or two below the strongest in the state. Every team in south Texas needs to strengthen its program

Very well said by all. These kids play hard and work hard all year. The least we can do is support them and let them know that hard work is how you get where you want to go.

Looks like I was right. Sunday's edition will have articles on East Bernard, shiner, st Paul, and sacred heart. Also, looks like TejasMike decided that he was wrong and kept quiet. Good luck next week to all Crossroads teams, including Refugio. Go Cats!!!!

I say BOOOO Refugio! I think they are poor sports and it starts at the Jr. High level. I have seen how they play and they play dirty! They run the score up so high even at the Jr. High level that it is just horrible. I had never seen a score in a football game as high as I witnessed last year for some Jr. High game that was going on before the game that I was going there to attend. Refugio never did put in their 2nd string and the high scoring was just to beat down the other team! That is teaching poor sportsmanship. I am all for winning, but geeze when you get 3 or 4 TD's ahead then you can go on and let your second string have some play time! I see now that they were trying to beat some sort of record...wow a great record to set....THE BIGGEST POOR SPORT!

u people r a joke! if yall r so sick of refugio why dont u go read a book instead of waiting for them to post something about refugio so u can down them! o wait let me guess yall r hoping that the advocate will listen to yall and think yall really matter that much and just stop posting about refugio? really? ummmm..... prolly NOT!! why dont yall go coach a team in the "crossroads" and have the proper officials rank them #1 and THEN get this far in the playoffs! its comical how grown adults actually blame the kids on the team because they dont agree with the way Coach Herring does things! o and lets not forget how refugio has no class cause one player does this and one does that in 8th grade! u people talk as if yall have come from a perfect team that jesus coached! NEWSFLASH! there r no perfect kids on a team or a perfect coach if there were there wouldnt b only 1 jesus! if urself as an adult are so quick to bash kids for tryin hard to win then trust me there r kids who will make mistakes also who have yet to learn and u as an adult should know better! u talk about coach herring? well thank god ur not our coach cause ur attitude isnt the best ive seen so far either! and fyi if we dont win state so b it! we will still have been going longer than ur team and next year u will hear about refugio again and again and again! cause in case u didnt know refugio has had the media attention for decades so where u been??? either deal with it or die with it on ur mind! :)

GrouP six, I don't know what kind of drugs your on, refurgio would not have a chance against a team like Calhoun, it would be a blow out. Your really stinking up the joint here with your lame digs at the 30-4a teams . Get a life loser.

Calhoun the #5 rated team in the state!

Actually Calhoun will wind up 9-16. They lost in rd of 16. Slapstick, 30-4a is a very week district....time to get out of denial. I think Refugio would be competitive. They are bigger size wise than most schools in the district. I am not going to say they would beat Calhoun this year, but they would be a playoff team. Also calling people a loser reflects mainly on you slapstick.

Calhoun was a decent 4a school who went step for step with KT, luck will have it KT won. So your telling me refurgio is every bit as good as KT, not!, then your right and I'm wrong. Seriously, your talking about a 2a school against a 4a school. There is a reason there are classifications like this. You can't be serious.

Pulling for the Bobcats to bring home a title!

JLord- 9-16 ranking really wouldn't be accurate as that would only include Div 2 4A teams. Just sayin.

JLordtree says...

Oh Yahoo native would be 17-32. Wow slapstick, reading comprehension must not have been in your education. I never said they could beat Calhoun, much less Toby, instead said they would just be competitive in the district. Classifications don't mean quality.

Calhoun was a decent 4A team that was overrated just like I said all season. These AP voters see Calhoun's undefeated record but fail to take into account its against some pretty weak competition. Then you have a team like Tivy not ranked at all because they have 2 losses but the voters fail to see their losses were against Steele (defending 5A champ) and LT (defending 4A champ). Kerrville Tivy isn't even a top 10 4A team and they got smashed the next week by Calallen who I said all along is a team you don't want to meet a 2nd time in the playoffs. Some Calhoun fans I talked to thought they could hang with Lake Travis...the same LT that smashed Tivy 56-14. lol. LT was up on Tivy 35-7 at the half and coasted the 2nd half. Yet, these Calhoun fans thought they could hang with LT ROFL

I think Refugio would give Calhoun a game and could possibly win. Now if it was Refugio against LT, no way!!! But Calhoun is no LT. The thing with Calhoun fans is that they actually think they're this powerhouse team like LT. Sorry, but powerhouse teams have more than just 1 undefeated district title and 1 undefeated season.

Good luck to Refugio in the State Final.
