Finley out as Victoria East football coach

Victoria East football coach Mickey Finley submitted his resignation Monday afternoon to the Victoria Independent School District.
"I have been blessed to work with a lot of incredible student athletes and coaches during my career," Finley said in a statement. "I never wanted to do anything but coach, and I was given that opportunity for 37 years."
"I would like to thank the communities of Victoria, Cuero, and Schulenburg for giving me such great memories. At this point, the time has simply come for me to spend more time with my family and let someone else take the reins of the Titans program."
Finley came to Victoria from Schulenburg in early 2007. He coached the final three seasons at Victoria Memorial, before moving to Victoria East when that school opened in 2010. During that span Finley's teams were 29-26 with three playoff appearances.
Finley's career record of 221-159-6 placed him in the Top 60 for coaching victories in state history. Schulenburg's Tommy Bludau is the only active coach in the Crossroads region that had more career victories than Finley entering this year.
"When we brought Mickey Finley to Victoria, we knew he had a history of creating winning football programs," said VISD Superintendent Bob Moore. "He laid the framework for a strong program at Victoria East High School, and we wish him well in his future."

Victoria East is prime for the right person to come in and take that program up a notch.
Coach Finley leaves the program in very good shape.

There was a rumor about a week ago of Coach Soza from Alice coming to Victoria. I think it is strange that I hear that rumor, then this happens...

Why the Alice coach? Not a great track record. Here's to hoping coach herring decides to go 4A.

Soza didn't do much at Alice but was a rock solid winner at his two stops before that. He also had his sons playing qb for him at Mathis and Beeville.
I have full faith in the current AD to make a great hire.
