East stuns West with team tennis victory

The two rivals completed 18 tennis matches and two sets, yet a winner was still not determined.
Victoria West dominated the boys singles and doubles, while their opponents from East picked off enough wins in singles and doubles from both sexes to stay with their favored opponents.
The two teams split the girls singles matches, while East led the way in girls' doubles. The Titans took two of three of those matches, and Claire Hickner and Maria Garza went down to the wire with West's Yesenia Martinez and Brianna Vasquez before falling in three games.
It wasn't the last time Garza and Vasquez were involved in a tight match that went down to the wire, either.
Garza overcame a deficit in her tiebreaker to defeat Vasquez 7-6 (2), 2-6, 12-10 to secure the surprise 10-9 victory for the Titans.
A coach told the sophomore the match was riding on her gutting out a victory and she responded.
West will host Gregory-Portland in a district match next Thursday. East has 10 days off to prepare for a non-district match against Wharton on Oct. 22.
