AUSTIN - Victoria West's Trevor Vega holds third place after the first round of the Class 4A UIL Golf State Championships.
Vega, a senior, shot a 1-under-par 71 on Monday at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course.
"He's dialed in," said West coach Fred Neuman. "He was taking his time, making sure of the distance, his club selections and the pin placements. He did a good job of managing his game."
Scottie Scheffler of Dallas Highland Park leads the tournament with a 68, and Boerne Champion's Zander Lozano is in second with a 69.
Four players are tied for fourth after shooting 72.
Vega, who is making his second consecutive appearance at the state tournament, had four birdies and a triple bogey.
He birdied par-4 holes No. 1, 9 and 17 and the par-3 No. 12. He shot a six on the par-3 No. 14.
"He was striking the ball pretty well," Neuman said. "He had 30 putts, made 10 out of 14 fairways, and hit 14 greens in regulation.
"He would be tied for the lead if the par 3 hadn't have bit him. He played very well."
Lake Travis leads the team standings with a 300, one stroke ahead of Northwest Nelson.
Highland Park and Boerne Champion are each two strokes back.
Vega will tee off Tuesday at 8:10 a.m., as the tournament concludes at the Jimmy Clay Course.
