A hoodie, team jersey, genetic logo t-shirt, it seems like sports fans usually get the same thing each year.
Not that those things aren't appreciated, in my case a closet full of burnt orange isn't a bad thing, but what if you want to get that person something unique?
Here are some cool gift ideas for the sports fan in your life. Trust me, you do not want to be that person who gives the gift of a sports Snuggie.
Those aren't cool under any circumstance.
Texas A&M Cotton Bowl Shirts
Although having a Johnny Football jersey would make for a great Christmas present, the demand is so high right now that a Texas A&M No. 2 jersey will be harder to get before Christmas than a Lakers defensive stop. But, that doesn't mean your favorite A&M fan will be left empty handed on Christmas. Don't let a little thing like the Sooners holding a 11-5 series advantage over the Aggies while the teams were in the Big 12 stop you from boasting at Cowboys Stadium.
San Antonio Spurs Alternate Jersey
Help a San Antonio fan jump on the alternate jersey craze by purchasing one of the new Spurs jerseys. Since Tim Duncan has only a few years left in his career, you can go with the legend, or go with Tony Parker. But, somehow, I don't think Gregg Popovich was talking about uniforms when he said, "I want some nasty."
Hank Haney Strike Zone
If Haney can help the pros, this tool can't hurt your golf game. If anything, asking for this gives you an excuse to go out to Victoria Country Club or Colony Creek and get a few hours in. Guys, just don't let your significant other know Haney was Tiger Woods' golf coach. I'm not a fortune teller, but I don't see that situation ending well.
Rockets All-Star Holiday Ticket Pack
What's better than seeing Jeremy Lin and the crew on TV.... Oh, wait, you can't. Get your favorite sports fan their Rockets fix with this gift bundle. The bundle includes tickets to January games against the Lakers and Clippers along with February dates to see against Milwaukee and Utah. You also get a ticket to watch the Rising Stars Challenge at the Toyota Center on Feb. 15. If the idea of having to sit through a game against the Bucks is a nonstarter for you, the Rockets also offer other packages.
Alamo BOWL OR Cotton Bowl Tickets
Although the state's two most popular teams had very different seasons, you can still get in on the action depending on where your allegiances lie. Texas takes on Oregon State in the Alamo Bowl, while A&M takes on the Sooners in the Cotton Bowl. For the big spender in the group, "field and touch" seats at Cowboys Stadium for the Cotton Bowl are running at about the price of two or three new cars per ticket.
Cowboys' Jason Witten Leader T-Shirt
The Cowboys haven't given their fans much to cheer about in the last 16 years, but Witten has jumped out as a fan favorite since getting to Dallas in 2004. You can commemorate Witten's season and career with this shirt, which won't cost an arm and a leg to get.
Texas Longhorns Car Charger
Mack Brown's program may be in need of some energy, but your electronic devices won't be thanks to this item sold at the University Co-op. This charger plugs into the lighter or charging port of your car and will charge your iPod, iPad, iPhone, mp3 player and ereader. The kit includes three tips so if you need a charge, it'll have a plug.
Dream Team, book
If you want to relive the biggest highlight of the golden age of the NBA, pick up "Dream Team: How Michael, Magic, Larry, Charles, and the Greatest Team of All Time Conquered the World and Changed the Game of Basketball Forever." Anyone who grew up watching the NBA in the 1980s will tell you, this is the greatest team ever assembled. The Barcelona Olympics changed the game and the culture of basketball.
The Longest Shot, book
America has always had a love affair with the underdogs, whether its the 1980 Olympic hockey team or someone else. But Jack Fleck was such an underdog, NBC declared a winner to the 1955 U.S. Open with the golfer still on the course and with a real shot to win it all. Read the story of how an unknown golfer from Iowa beat his idol and golf legend Ben Hogan on the course.
DKR, The Royal Scrapbook
About three months before his death, the University of Texas Press published a collection of photos, newspaper clippers and letters that gave the reader an insight into the private life of a public football figure in this state.
World Baseball Classic AUTHENTIC team caps
Given the Astros performance the last two years and the Rangers tanking at the end of the 2012 season after blowing it twice in the World Series, Texas baseball fans might be a little down. Never fear, that's what the World Baseball Classic is for, offering a menagerie of different, cool-looking hats for a whole lot of different countries that most people didn't realize play baseball (although not well, mind you.)
Texas Rangers Pro-Toaster ELITE
There are some things that aren't meant for normal fans. And this is one of them. If you know someone who sleeps and breathes the Rangers, well, now you can help them eat the team too by giving them a toaster that brands each piece of bread with the team's logo. Many other teams offer such trinkets, but not the Astros, whose holiday section on their website leads to a blank page.
C.C. Hooks Sammy Seagull stuffed animal
Get the youngest baseball fan in your life a soft addition to his or her crib with one of the two mascots for the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks. Especially if you're an Astros fan, might as well introduce them to a winning team: While the Astros were wallowing in another 100-loss season, the Hooks won with the team's future on the field, and should again field a good team in 2012.
Houston Texans Golf Gift Set
If the weather is nice on during NFL playoff bye week or, as Houston football fans hope, the week between Championship Sunday and the Super Bowl, your Texans fan will appreciate this gift. The set included four team logo balls, a logo marker and a divot tool.
