Victoria East was less than midway through the first quarter when coach Yulonda Wimbish-North went to the bench.

The Titans had a two-point lead over Beeville and Wimbish-North wasn't pleased.

"I think we came out flat and to make a statement - I'm not going to watch that - so I took them out," Wimbish-North said. "I think that shows the depth of our team. We did take the starting five out and they went in and made an impact."

The Titans bench players closed out the quarter with a 9-4 run and went on to a 61-34 win over the Lady Trojans on Tuesday night at the East gym.

"We were just trying to pick it up from where the starters had started," said reserve Julia Stastny. "It's very important for the bench to play well, especially when our starters aren't doing well. We can have a spark off the bench to help our starters get going too."

Stastny did her part by scoring 16 points as the Titans (28-2) improved to 2-0 in district.

"I just try to be more of a team player," Stastny said. "I try to look for the open man when possible. Yes, I do look to score when I'm under the basket."

Beeville (17-8, 0-2) was within 10 points in the third quarter before East pulled away in a game that included 41 fouls.

Randi Maupin and Theresa Amador fouled out for the Lady Trojans and posts Kenya Griffin and Kendall Carter each had four fouls, making Stastny's performance under the basket even more critical.

"I'm happy for her because I think she needed that," Wimbish-North said. "I'm happy for her because we've been looking for her to have a little breakout in scoring because she can score."

Danielle Franklin scored 14 points and Adelaide Wenzel had 13 for the Titans, who visit Gregory-Portland on Friday.

"It's about our team playing the best that it can," Wimbish-North said. "It's being at the top of your game. I think that's the point. If we play our best and the score is whatever it is than that's fine. But when you don't play your best then that's a problem."
