East boys escape with one-point district win over Floresville

Victoria East coach John Grammer wasn't complaining, but he had a hard time believing what he had just witnessed.

Grammer watched a Floresville player drive the lane for an uncontested layup. Fortunately for the Titans, they led by three with time expiring in the fourth quarter.

"It was good to win," Grammer said. "I'm not sure how we did it, but we were able to pull it out."

The Titans (15-10) escaped with a 50-49 decision over the Tigers on Tuesday night at the East gym and maintained a share of the district lead with a 2-0 record.

East got off to a fast start, outscoring Floresville (14-10, 1-1) 21-11 in the first quarter.

"That's one of the things we've been talking about and trying to improve on," Grammer said. "We've been a slow-starting team. That was the good thing. We really jumped on them quick."

The problem for the Titans came when they started missing shots in the second and third quarters, allowing the Tigers back in the game.

"It's difficult to keep your head up when you're missing all the shots we missed," Grammer said. "That takes a really mature, mentally-tough team to deal with that. We were just missing layup after layup and open shot after open shot, and that's tough to deal with. But we have to because that's where we are some nights."

Ian Sharpless led the Titans with 18 points and Xavier Ellis had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Dav'Vin Hill added seven points and seven steals.
