EL CAMPO - Joey Hunt committed to play football at TCU almost a year ago.

He didn't make his official visit to the Fort Worth campus until just over a week ago.

"They're getting better and better," Hunt said. "They're getting newer stuff. Their locker room and weight room are unreal. It's awesome. Their putting new stuff in the indoor place and the stadium is going to be so nice. Everything is happening at TCU right now."

Hunt will make his commitment to TCU official on Wednesday, national signing day.

The El Campo senior will do so at a signing ceremony in Austin with other members of the Under-19 Team USA.

Team USA will play the World Team in USA Football's International Bowl on Wednesday.

"When I heard about USA football, I was stoked," Hunt said. "Just getting to play for the USA with 50 kids on the roster. I'm getting to represent America, Texas, El Campo, my family and everything, I'm excited."

The 6-foot-3, 285-pound Hunt earned his Team USA selection with his performance for the Ricebirds last season.

He had 32 pancake blocks and did not allow a sack at offensive tackle. He had 75 tackles, including 15 tackles for losses and five sacks, and three fumble recoveries at defensive tackle.

He was a second-team selection at offensive tackle and a third-team pick on the defensive line on the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A all-state team.

"It's just his motor," said El Campo coach Bob Gills, who plans to be at the signing ceremony. "He plays so hard on every play. He's got a great first step. He's just so quick off the ball."

Hunt has no regrets about committing to TCU early and was pleased with his senior season, although he wishes the Ricebirds had made a deeper playoff run.

"I've always been a competitor so anytime I step on a football field or play backyard basketball or football, I'm competing and trying to win. I hate losing," Hunt said. "I wasn't worried about having to talk to different coaches every week. It was more relaxing being able to focus on football."

Hunt will line up at defensive tackle for Team USA and hopes to play the same position at TCU.

"I think I have a real good shot on defense because of my quick first step," Hunt said. "That's where I want to play. If I'm good enough on defense, that's where they're going to let me play. If I have an upside on offense, they'll move me over there."

Gillis has no doubt Hunt will fit in at whatever position he plays for TCU.

"To me he's just a true football player," Gillis said. "That's what TCU wins with and why they're so successful."

Hunt is looking forward to being a part of TCU's success, especially now that the Horned Frogs have moved into the Big 12.

"When TCU came along, especially after they had a real good year after my junior year and finished No. 2 in the nation, I mean that's where I wanted to go," Hunt said. "I knew that. I liked the coaches, I liked the atmosphere, how good of a school it is and going to the Big 12 helps them a whole lot."
