Victoria West senior golfer Trenton Lee knows the march to the state tournament at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin begins with a single step.
Or in this case a touranment.
Lee got his path off on the right foot this weekend.
Lee and Trevor Vega each shot a final round 77 to help the Warriors win the Victoria West Spring Classic at Colony Creek Country Club on Saturday.
"It's really exciting to come out with a bang," Lee said. "I hope to progress and to the same, if not better, from here on out."
West had a team score of 323 to give them a total score of 645 at the tournament held at Victoria Country Club and Colony Creek.
The Warriors edged Corpus Christi King's "A" team by a single stroke.
Vega had the best individual score of 151 while Lee finished four strokes behind to take second place.
Colton Escamilla rounded out the West Top 3 with a pair of 83 rounds to give him a two-day score of 166.
Wharton's Branden Rachunek shot a closing-round best 73, giving him a two-day scored of 160 and a fifth individual finish.
After the round, Lee said he wanted to make his final semester of high school golf memorable by advancing past the regional round West reached last season.
Lee added that he worked on his mental game and short game over the summer. One of his teammates wasn't suprised to see him high on the leader board during the spring classic.
"He's doing what he should be doing, he's a really good player," Vega said.
The Warriors entered the day one stroke ahead of King's "A" team.
Despite playing Round 2 on a different course with little room for error, the Warriors matched King's second day score of 323 to hang on.
"I think the boys took it upon themselves to meet the challenge today," said West coach Fred Neuman.
Day 2 also brought the additional challenge of stronger winds.
Golfers faced wind gusts of 10-20 mph on a different course than they faced on Friday.
"If you don't hit a putt perfect it's probably not going in here," Vega said. "There's little room for error."
Added Escamilla: "You just really had to kind of survive, you couldn't get overly greedy or anything."
The Warriors will look to keep the momentum from this tournament win going on Feb. 17 when they travel to San Antonio for the East Central Hornet Open at River Bend Golf Course.
Titans finish ninth
Sammy Ray Hysquierdo shot a team-best 171, including a 86 on the final round to help the Titans finish ninth at the Victoria West spring classic.
East had a team score of 737 over the two-day tournament, 94 strokes behind tournament winner Victoria West.
Troy Ramos shot rounds of 85 and 94 to give him a total of 179 for the second-best Titans score.
St. Joseph, Calhoun round out field
The St. Joseph Flyers shot a team total of 821, while the Calhoun Sandcrabs finished with 867 to finish 13th and 15th.
St. Joseph's Kyle Oliver shot a 178, while Calhoun's Mason Elgin shot 200 as both led their respective teams.
