    Bazan wins Victoria Golf title

After the final round of the 2012 Victoria City Golf Championship, competitors were joking about renaming the Riverside Golf Course after Mark Bazan.

Judging by his performance at the annual event, it's easy to see why.

Bazan reclaimed his title by shooting a final round even par 72 to hold off Trevor Vega to win his fourth city golf championship at Riverside on Monday.

"It's good to be back on top," Bazan said with a smile.

Bazan's three-day total of 218 was four strokes better than Vega's.

Doug Wilson and John Kozelsky both shot three-day totals of 226, but Wilson took third in the men's championship flight based on a scorecard playoff.

Bazan opened the tournament with a 70 at Victoria Country Club then claimed the lead with a second day 72 at Colony Creek Country Club.

"I don't know if most people know how good he really is, but he has all the talent in the world," Vega said.

Bazan said he is most comfortable at Riverside and Colony Creek, and it showed.

His second round at Colony Creek gave him a two stroke lead and he added two more strokes Monday at Riverside.

"You've got to put it in play and I managed to do that yesterday," Bazan said. "I made some putts and it worked out."

The Victoria Golf City Championship is an annual three-day tournament that requires golfers to play at all three major golf courses.

Last year, Bazan came into the final round trailing 2011 champion Claude Bridges by five strokes and struggled at the final round at Victoria Country Club, shooting an 80 and finishing in four place.

For him, the rotation made a big difference.

"The cycle changes everything," Bazan said. "If you start at the club vs. ending at the club. I think the club is a more difficult course, and if you're tired and beat up from the other two days of golfing, it makes it a little more difficult."

Jackie Gonzales was a two-stroke winner over Chloe Velasco in the Ladies Flight. Gonzales finished with a three-day score of 248.

Zach Blevins' 247 was the winning score for the Juniors 14 and Under Flight while Cabbott Hanes took the Juniors 15 and Up Flight with the same score.

The Ladies and Juniors flights concluded at Colony Creek while all other flights concluded at Riverside on Monday.

John Alvarado's score of 236 was one stroke better than Cecil Marchant in the Senior Flight.

    Hole-in-one at Riverside

When Kevin Pfister watched his tee shot at the No. 5 hole at Riverside, one thought came into his mind.

"Did it really go in?," Pfister said.

The shot gave him his second ever hole-in-one and it came during the Victoria City Championship.

Pfister used a four-hybrid from the blue tee 174 yards away to sink the hole-in-one.

    Bridges finishes fifth

Defending Victoria City Champion Bridges improved on his scores every round, but couldn't quite catch up to Bazan.

Bridges finished fifth after posting individual round scores of 80, 77 and 72 for a two-day total of 229.

West Warriors weekend on the course

Although the high school golf season is over, a couple of Warriors showcased their games during the city championships.

Vega finished second in the Men's Championship Flight and Colton Escamilla was the runner-up in the Juniors 15 and Up Flight.

"They have a lot more experience than I do," Vega joked. "It was really fun, I had a great time and a lot of people that I knew growing up got to play against me and I against them."

Escamilla has one year of UIL competition remaining next year while Vega competed in his final high school competition as a medalist at last year's UIL State Golf Tournament.

Vega said he's been accepted into the University of Texas' and plans to go through the pharmacy program.

He has not decided if he will walk on to the golf team, but said he would stay put if a spot on another school's golf team opened up.

"It's more of a game to me now that it ever has been," Vega said about golf.
