There are five undefeated teams entering the playoffs from the Crossroads region. We assess each ones chances of a long playoff run and which teams are likely to be in the way as they make their journey.
Class 4A, D-II | Biggest obstacle: Vista Ridge, Kerrville Tivy, Cedar Park
The Sandcrabs have the benefit of resting a little before opening against Floresville next week. Their path would likely lead them through Edcouch-Elsa the following week and then against either Cedar Park Vista Ridge or Kerrville Tivy in the regional round. It won't get any easier from there, with Cedar Park looming in the next round.
CHANCES: Being without Cory Williams makes their road really difficult, and the teams in the third round are scary good.
EL CAMPO (10-0)
Class 3A, D-I | Biggest obstacles: La Grange, Carthage
No team has been helped more this year by realignment than El Campo. The Ricebirds are good enough to compete in a class up and a tougher region, so naturally moving into a weaker region and down to Class 3A is a boon for them. La Grange could give them a fight in the first round, but there's smooth sailing until the state semis, when they are likely to see Carthage.
CHANCES: Excellent. El Campo's competition leading up to the semifinals is not in the same class as them.
Class 2A, D-I | Biggest obstacles: Cameron Yoe, McGregor, San Diego
Winning the district carries more benefits than bragging rights for the Brahmas. It also means they won't see top ranked Cameron Yoe until at least four rounds into the playoffs. The problem is that Hallettsville will have to contend with an undefeated San Diego team or a McGregor team that has only lost to the Yoemen this year.
CHANCES: Beat McGregor or San Diego and we'll talk.
EAST BERNARD (10-0)
Class 2A, D-II | Biggest obstacles: Refugio, Blanco, Karnes City, Lexington
East Bernard, led by TCU recruit Ty Slanina, is itching for a chance to make a run, and its path is a lot cleaner than, say, Refugio or Lexington. The Brahmas would likely see Blanco in the area round, which is a good team but one that still lost to woeful Universal City Randolph. Karnes City, which is 9-1, could also be trouble, and don't forget that Region IV still runs through Refugio or Lexington.
CHANCES: There's a lot of good teams in the way.
Class 2A, D-II Biggest obstacles: Lexington, East Bernard, Rogers
The Bobcats don't have it easy this year. Likely waiting for them in the area round of the Division II playoffs will be Rogers and its high-octane offense. After that, most likely Lexington, then superstar Ty Slanina and East Bernard. The Bobcats have the talent to repeat - there are few better quarterback-receiver combos in Texas than Travis Quintanilla and Marcus Thompson - but the competition will be stiffer this year. Refugio has caught a lot of flack for playing its starters three and four quarters against bad competition; well, these are the opponents they are preparing for. They may need all of those reps to get back to Dallas, too.
CHANCES: Good. There's a lot of good teams in the way, but Refugio is still considered the favorite.
