The lengthy meeting following Victoria East's season opener wasn't the result of the final score.
The reason for the session was how the result was achieved.
Corpus Christi Ray took control from the start and ran off with a 56-39 win over the Lady Titans on Tuesday night at the East gym.
East coach Yulonda Wimbish-North knows her team returns only one starter from last year, but she was more dismayed with her team's effort than performance.
"I would like to see a little bit more scrappiness at all times," Wimbish-North said. "I think we were scrappy at moments. We have to be intense at all times and I think there were times we were not that intense. We were not getting in our defensive position quickly. We're trying to press and we're not getting there with a sense of urgency."
The Lady Texans scored the first nine points of the game, dominated the boards, and maintained a double-digit lead from the 1:55 mark of the first quarter.
East trailed by 12 points at halftime, but went the opening 4:41 of the second quarter without scoring and saw the deficit grow to as much as 20.
"It showed we have a lot to improve on," said senior Kendall Carter, the lone returning starter. "We are a new team, but we do have a lot of talent and with that talent we have to do effort and passion on the court."
Casey Jackson scored 18 points to lead the Lady Titans, who will go back to work Wednesday.
"Some of the mistakes those are fixable things," Wimbish-North said. "I think you have a young team and they are on a big scale now and you can tell they've never been here. You can tell by some of the decision making. We were going way too fast at times, a little bit out of control. Those are things I think that are fixable. But the intensity has to come from inside and they're going to have to be scrappy because of what we have on our team."
