I covered the 2000 Bay City team that won the state champions hip. You're right, it was an extremely talented team. That team beat Memorial 14-7 earlier in the year and the difference was a punt return for a touchdown by Byron Jones. Memorial played with the Blackcats and it couldn't have done that without talent. You spoke of Refugio. I said it had talent. But don't underestimate the importance of the indoor facility. When the weather was bad, as it often is during the playoffs, Refugio was having a regular practice while other teams were trying to do what they could in a cramped gym. When I covered Refugio's state championship game, I also watched Wimberley and Lake Travis play. Their players were not born looking like they are now. They got there through hard work. Talent, good coaching, and good fortune are the most important ingredients to making a deep playoff run. But having good facilities helps. That's my point.
ESPN’s Outside the Lines program featuring Refugio and scheduled to run Tues day was postponed. An ESPN spokesperson said the Refugio program was delayed in order to run reports on Penn State and Syracuse. The spokesperson said the network hopes to air the pro gram next week, but did not give a specific date. Mike
Stings 86 - I haven't covered that many Victoria school playoff games. The one that comes to mind is when Victoria High played Aldine MacArthur and Odell James in the semifinal at Kyle Field in College Station. I still believe if the Stings had converted on fourth and short in the second half, they would have won the game. Mike
Under the positive-negative points formula, Gregory-Portland has plus 18, which is the maximum it can get, for its win over Victoria West. Beeville has a minus one for its loss to West. West has a plus one for its win over Beeville and a minus 18 for its loss to Gregory-Portland, leaving it with a minus 17. If Beeville beats Gregory-Portland by any margin, Beeville and Gregory-Portland would have a better plus-minus ratio than West. If the district simply used positive points, which very few districts do, Beeville would have to win by two points or more. Of course, if West beats East, this is all moot and West goes to the playoffs. Thankfully, this is all speculation and what matters is what happens Friday night on the field.
Three area teams ranked in preseason baseball poll
Just an oversight. Schulenburg is ranked No. 4 in the Class 2A poll.

Facilities don't benefit new coach at Victoria East
