Refugio fans at Bobcat Stadium for Friday night’s home opener against Hallettsville may notice a change on the scoreboard. The field at Bobcat Stadium has been named in the honor of Jack Sportsman. The name has been added to the scoreboard and the official ceremony will be held at halftime. Sportsman was a member of Refugio’s 1946 and 1947 teams that were regional champions, which was as far as a team could advance, and he went on to become a Little All-American on the offensive and defensive line at Texas A&I. Sportsman’s love for the Bobcats continued long after he graduated from the high school. He served as the public address announcer at Bobcat Stadium for 56 years and was president of the Refugio Ex-Students Association. Sportsman suffered a heart attack on his way to the press box before last year’s game against Skidmore-Tynan and passed away at the age of 78. “He was the kind of guy you can never replace,” said Refugio coach Jason Herring. “He adored the Bobcats. He loved everything about them.” Naming the field at Bobcat Stadium for Sportsman is a fitting tribute to a wonderful man.
