South Texas' offensive outburst
August 29, 2010
Every opening weekend is exciting, but this year seemed to have a little extra flair.
Right as the games were starting on Friday, we got very quick updates from games our reporters were covering in Victoria and Cuero.
Touchdown. Turnover. Touchdown. Touchdown.
Faster than we could blink, points were going up on the board. And it wasn't just early scoring - teams were finding the end zone early and often.
We reported scores from around the region - 30s, 40s, 50s, and in the case of Victoria East, 76.
Reporter John Hornberg tweeted from the press box at Memorial Stadium that someone said it was more like a basketball score. I've covered a lot of basketball games where neither team has reached 76 points.
We know teams have started passing more - adopting more pro and college style offenses. But a lot of teams, including the Titans, did a significant amount of damage on the ground too.
We'll find out in coming weeks whether the offensive outburst was a opening-night fluke or the start of a new trend in high school football.
