Local grads shine for Victoria College
October 21, 2010
There are a few reasons I like covering Victoria College basketball.
One is just that I like basketball. I know Texas is football crazy, and baseball is America's pastime, but I'll take basketball any day. I've also enjoyed the brief interactions I've had with the team. The coach and players are always happy to talk.
But one of the best things of all is that most of the guys on the team are local. Some are VERY local. At Wednesday night's game, they had four players in double figures. One went to Gonzales (A.J. Irwin) and the other three were recent Memorial grads (Donte McGee, Angel Reyes and Jonathan Flores).
The team also features Justyn Terrell, D.J. Hybner (St. Joseph), Cameron Gomez and redshirt Marc Rodriguez, all Victoria products.
You don't have to go to far to find hometowns of some other players on the roster. Colten Clay (Edna) and redshirt Andy Cardona (Calhoun) are a short drive away.
It's great for folks who watched these young men play throughout high school (or maybe even earlier), to see them in action even after they've graduated.
Here are some shots of some local guys in action at Wednesday's game:
D.J. Hybner from three.
A.J. Irwin goes up for a layup.
Justyn Terrell drives to the rim.
Donte McGee lets go of a three.
Angel Reyes scores in traffic.
