Opponents a better barometer for East, West
September 2, 2010
By John Hornberg
A "Speak Out" caller a day ago said that Victoria East's win against Harlingen South meant little; the Hawks, after all, were 0-10 last year and played last week like they want a second straight winless season. He said, in a comment oozing with indignant feelings, that "we'll really know what they are made of" when they face Calallen in their homecoming game next week.
On the contrary, I think we'll know that this week. East plays middle-of-the-road Kingsville King, a school that has finished 4-6 the last three seasons. And the same can be said for Victoria West, which will open its season at home against San Antonio Brackenridge, which had an amazing offensive unit last season, but lost major players.
My reasoning: Both opponents fall in the middle of the pack, and the Titans and Warriors performance will give fans a good idea of what success on a week-in and week-out basis is going to be. King is about as middling as they come, and this season's team is probably going to be about the same as last years considering they graduated no one of note, according to Texas Football Magazine.
Brackenridge, coming off a 9-2 season and 7-0 district record, was blown out by S.A. Sam Houston, a talented 3A school that shares a district with Cuero, 43-14.
Yes, a team as talented as Calallen will be an entertaining game, but East and West are in a strong district this year. Even Floresville, 2-8 last season, seems to have improved dramatically. The weakest and the strongest teams aren't always the best barometers. Rather, it's Brackenridge and King, teams in the middle from which most opponents come, that will allow East and West to show what they have.
