Homecoming fun
September 18, 2010
Unfortunately for the Warriors, homecoming didn't end like they'd hoped.
A week full of celebrating led up to a rather unpleasant finish - but luckily, it's only the third game of the season, and not a district game. (And Bay City is no cupcake - it seems the days of scheduling a punching bag for your homecoming game are officially over.)
Homecomings and spirit weeks are designed to pump up the school and celebrate the teams - but it doesn't always work that way. Even though the West volleyball team beat Sweeny 3-1, that one loss was one that didn't make coach Sandy Longoria very happy.
She talked after the game about the distraction of such a festive week. (I don't think she was blaming a dropped game on homecoming - just talking about the dynamic). She said the team got together afterward and discussed focusing on each game.
It's a cliche in sports, taking it one game at a time, but that's kind of for a reason - it's actually important. Bill Belichick might be boring, but he's won a heck of a lot of games.
So even though I've said all of that about homecoming being a potential distraction, that doesn't change the fact that it's a lot of fun.
We had a great submitted photo from the crowd at Victoria East's homecoming last week, here: http://www.advosports.com/community/photos/go-big-red/
