Athlete of the Year

2010 was a big year in the Crossroads area. In addition to a split of the area's biggest school, there were also state champions and runner-ups. There were great team and individual seasons.

And speaking of those individuals, we'd like to recruit your help. We'll be determining our 2010 Advocate area male and female Athletes of the Year. It can be from any varsity sport in the following counties: Victoria, Calhoun, DeWitt, Lavaca, Jackson, Goliad and Refugio.

Post your nominations to this blog, and we'll make sure they're included in the initial discussion. Then we'll narrow it down and put the finalists in a poll on Advosports.

Now, the online fan vote is only one element of the final decision. It could potentially help us decide the winner, but it's not a lock. It is, however, a way for you to be heard.

Start posting your picks now, and we'll update you when the polls will open.

Victoria Wiesman was the area leader in assists in volleyball for 2010. In the top 25 in area digs, and aces. She was named all district first team, sports writers all state honorable mention, area All Academic, Academic All State, and selected to play in the Chick-fil-la area volleyball game at Victoria College. She was also recently named First Team all district basketball and selected to play in the Chick-fil-la area basketball game. She played all positions on the basketball court, including post, which is a large accomplishment for a 5' 4" individual. She was one of the leading scorers on the team and rebounder. She is now running on the varsity track team. She is a leader on and off the courts.

I would like to nominate Miss Tabby Zella as the female Athlete of the year! Tabby represented the Mighty Victoria East Lady Titans in volleyball and soccer. Miss Zella is not only an amazing athlete, she is also a wonderful human being.

On the male side of things, I would like to nominate Mr. Jamie Thomas! Jamie also represented Victoria East. Honestly, I do not know to much about this young man, however, it was a JOY watching him play on the football field, and on the basketball court. He always gives 100%.

I would like to nominate micah montes as the male athlete of the year! He represnts the industrial cobras in football rushing 1,125 yards and in basketball he was the captain of the team, shooting gaurd and would average 12 points a game and also in baseball he plays mainly catching but will play wherever the coach needs him. You dont ever see an athlete that loses out of the basketball playoffs on a friday and plays in a baseball tourney that next day! Now thats an athlete! He plays with all his heart and gives the coaches more than 110%!

No Wharton County, huh? No Matagorda County? Guess the Matagorda Advocate is just for making $$, but their athletes don't count...

I would like to nominate Kerry Linn from Yoakum. Kerry is a four sport athlete competing in football, basketball, baseball and track. Kerry was a Captain of his football and basketball teams this year. He was named 2nd team linebacker and 2nd team punter in 28-3A. He was named to the 1st team in basketball averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds per game. Kerry was selected to play in the Chik-fil-A all-star basketball game. Kerry was a regional qualifier last year in track and is currently running in 3 relays for Yoakum. He is a member of the baseball team starting in left field and pitching.

Birdfan,

Yes, Wharton and Matagorda, too. Those were supposed to be included. If you have nominations for athletes in those counties, let us know.
