Bad things happen to good people
September 23, 2011
I met Ricky Lock when he was the head football coach at Runge. I used to enjoy going up there and talking football with him. He was a nice guy and a good football coach. I knew he wouldn't be there for long and sure enough he left for a job in Elgin. The next time I talked to Lock was when he became the AD and head football coach at Gonzales in 2007. He led the Apaches to the Class 3A, Division I quarterfinals, which didn't surprise me. Lock left after a year for a job in Gainesville. He was in Gainesville when his wife died suddenly after being diagnosed with Stage 4 lukemia. Terrible tragedy for Lock and his two daughters and son. Lock returned to Gonzales for the 2010 season and I finally got a chance to visit with him this week. He's doing about as well as can be expected under the circumstances. The Apaches are doing fine too. They will take a 4-0 record into their District 28-3A opener against Yoakum.
