Coaches across the area scrambled to fill their non-district football schedules Thursday after the UIL released its realignments for the next two academic years.

One man in more of a bind than most is Calhoun head coach Richard Whitaker. All day he searched for two additional non-district games to coincide contests against Corpus Christi Carroll and Cuero.

Eventually, Whitaker found those two contests. But that was not until he found out the Gobblers dropped the Sandcrabs from their Week 2 game that Whitaker claimed has been a handshake agreement for a few weeks.

Instead, Cuero will host fellow District 30-4A opponent Beeville that week.

As for how the Gobblers would up with the Trojans. Owens said he wanted to play a school where the varsity, sub-varsity and junior high programs in his town could play the same opponent. When Cuero played Calhoun each of the past two seasons, their junior high schools played against Beeville schools.

“Our program follows our guys to play,” Owens said. “We are still getting a quality 4A opponent. All of our teams in our program can be playing in the same location. It’s a little confusing for our junior highs when everyone is playing Calhoun and they are playing Beeville.”

Thursday morning Cuero was slated to play Calhoun. The change occurred after Owens and Whitaker each other’s company at the Region III Education Service Center in Victoria.

“For the last few months I had Cuero Week 2. He goes behind my back and drops that game,’ Whitaker said. “I drive off and get to my district meeting and the Beeville coach tells me that Cuero dropped up and picked up them.”

Needless to say, Whitaker was not a happy man Thursday night.

“We talked before,” said Beeville football coach Troy Moses. “I was looking for that week. Someone told me that he had an opening. We got together and agreed to play.”

Calhoun is still looking for a fourth non-district game after tentatively adding La Vernia and Monterrey Tech. The Sandcrabs are still slated to kickoff their season against Carroll.

“I have been on the phone calling people all over the state,” Whitaker said. “It’s not a good deal for us because we’ll probably end up traveling to who knows where. We’ll see what happens.”
