East and West boys soccer teams prep for home openers
January 16, 2012
For those who didn’t get their soccer fix over the weekend, Victoria West and Victoria East will have their boys home openers on consecutive days this week. Tuesday and Wednesday will be the first chances to see whether both sides will challenge for the District 59-4A title.
However, don’t look too much into the Warriors game against Tuloso-Midway or the Titans contest against Kingsville. East might be 4-0 after winning the Alice tournament, but both sides are far from midseason form.
West is still figuring out how to break down attacks after a scoreless draw in its season opener at El Campo.
Their front three of Hector Mendoza, Felipe Bastida and Jose Gonzalez are dependent upon service from the midfield. Against El Campo the Warriors took a bit too long possessing the ball in midfield and might have been a bit predictable.
Though it might not avenge how they ended the 2011 season, West will likely be more opportunistic with their chances tonight, against at Tuloso-Midway team that eliminated them at home in the bi-district playoffs.
The box scores would indicate East has not endured problems scoring through its first four games of the season. In the Alice Soccer Kickoff Classic the Titans scored 10 goals, while only conceding twice.
The true test will be to determine whether they can overcome the suspension of Marco Segura, who will miss some time after getting a straight red card in the championship of the Alice tournament.
Regardless, Tuesday and Wednesday figure to be a good barometer for both programs as it will provide another chance to see the West attack and give East an opportunity to overcome adversity.
