Thanks Green Bay
January 25, 2011
If you’re a college football fan please thank the Green Bay Packers today.
Why you say? Well they just gave all of us a counter point to one of the biggest arguments for the BCS.
BCS proponents argue that having a college football playoff diminish the importance of the regular season and under the current system every game is essentially a playoff game.
First of all every regular season game isn’ a playoff. I know that because when I saw Texas lose to UCLA last year the Longhorns still played eight games after that (although in hindsight I wish they didn’t).
The Packers were 8-6 and needed to win their final two regular season games to avoid elimination.
They did so beating both the Giants and the Bears at home.
How are you going to tell me those final two regular season games were made insignificant because of the playoffs?
What if a team like Texas dropped an early Big 12 game and needed home wins against Oklahoma State and Texas A&M to grab a wild card (or at large or whatever you want to call it) birth into an NCAA Football Tournament.
Do you think those two home games would be important?
Well they aren’t with the current system though.
