Name the game between East and West

Next week, Victoria East and Victoria West will square off for the first time in football.

If the previous matchups between the two schools is any indicator, Nov. 5's game promises to be a major affair with an attendance figure pushing five figures.

And like most major rivalries, they carry a name.

Oregon and Oregon State play the "Civil War" each year in either Eugene or Corvallis;

Some high school examples: El Paso Montwood and El Paso Americas play "The Battle on Joe Battle" for the name of the street the stadium the two schools share; Lewisville and Flower Mound Marcus is called the Battle of the Axe. Sadly, this writer's alma maters were so bad that the matchups with major rivals didn't carry names.

There have been a few names batted about between parents and students, and none of them seem to capture the essence of what this game is all about. So, I ask, what should we be calling this game?

A few starters from the newsroom:

  • Crosstown Showdown
  • Battle for the Boot (A play on the city's new marketing strategy, with the trophy being a boot.)
  • V for Vendetta
  • The game between East and West (Mike Forman isn't much for the cutesy.)
  • The Compass Cup

i want to say name it something like battle of Loop 463 since they both r accessable from d loop i cant wait i dont care what u call it it will b one of d biggest games n southtexas and im glad that both teams r doing good and yes i live n d east side so i will b going for d east plus d qb is my lil homie go lil ervin wish u d best

City Championship

Actually the city took over and now they are giving out a boot? WT...! we were trying to be more original but... Oh well the sword trophy was already made and will be presented to the winner at their banquet.

Two weeks ago i tried to give a name to the game on the advocats youtube channel. I called it the victoria texas bowl i kinda thought that name was lame though.

Both mascots are Sword carriers which is why"The Battle for the Sword" just seemed fitting. The Boot...ugh is the city's attempt to bring tourism to the area. hello!?! not everyone here wears boots!...

since they are both fighters, hence warriors and titans, and both play at memorial stadium, why not something like "The Battle at Memorial" or " The Clash at Memorial"
"The Victoria Vendetta"

"House Divided". The players have been protecting their "House" against others. Now it comes down to the "House" being divided. Actually a great logo idea, if you think about it. Memorial Stadium (the house), lightening storm, east and west players. Can you see it??

The Battle between East and West? Color me beige...Mike Foreman did you have a hand in naming the schools East and West to begin with? I have no vested interest but I think that either the "Battle for the Sword" since both teams have soldier mascots is cool...but the "Crosstown Showdown" is catchy too.

I just wanted to say that it is great to see the fans on both sides so excited about this upcoming showdown between your teams. Excitement like this to my knowledge was never shown during the years of consolidation. I hope that the division between the fans of each school will only be present during the game and that after all is said and done with, Victoria fans, both East and West, will support both teams in the playoffs.

The winning team would have to agree to loose the boot before next year, trophies disappear all the time, maybe somebody could drop it or something.

At least we can praise Victoria Advocate as they referenced the Name of The Game as "Battle for the Sword" instead of the "Battle for the Boot" (sounds like something the runner up should get - the boot).

At the bottom right hand corner of the front page of today's paper, VicAdvocate advertises a special section in tomorrow's paper as "Battle for the Sword".

Shame on the School Board and City of Victoria Officials for pushing their agenda where it doen't make sense. Let's GO VISD Athletic Director, Stand up with some BACKBONE.

Just got word from VISD that the decision to name the game with "Boot" was made by the Victoria Chamber of Commerce as they are the ones wanting to present the "Trophy" and it was Approved by VISD Superintendent.

I was advised that whoever does not approve, they should express their concern with VISD Supt.

The Victoria Chamber of Commerce does NOT even list "THE GAME" on the Upcoming Events.

Maybe we need to make calls to Randy Vivian as well.

I believe this can still be stopped and corrected.

My eyes have seen the "boot". It is someones old raggedy boot they stuck on a 12" square wood box and are putting a brass plaque on it. Battle of the Boot...Victoria East vs West. It is so ugly I am embarrassed for us to be on Fox Southwest handing out this piece of crap. A BOOT! This is Chamber of Commerce's way of pushing their will on Moore and overruling everyone else. Hey call it what you want, we still have the sword!! It is the worst trophy I have ever seen. Thanks alot Chamber!! Make us the laughing stock.

The Sword is awesome its stands about 4-5 foot tall real ornate and is mounted on a wooden plaque which will have the scores of all the games played... Victoria Please Raise Hell!! This boot is an embarrassment to the city!
